Scope and Contents

The Charles Bartlett Andrews papers (2011-16-0, .42 linear feet) document Charles B. Andrews (1834-1902), who was a lawyer, governor of Connecticut, and chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, consist of letters regarding men who sought or were recommended for government positions or assistance, other correspondence, legal opinions, petitions, drafts and working papers, printed materials related to court matters and the Connecitcut Republican party, and other documents. Andrews was born in Sunderland, Mass., in 1834 and attended Amherst College. He studied law in Sherman, Conn., and established a practice in Kent, Conn. When John M. Hubbard of Litchfield was chosen a member of Congress in 1863, Andrews to took charge of Hubbard's large law practice while he was in Washington, D.C. Andrews became a partner with Hubbard and handled some of the most important cases that came before the bar of Litchfield county. Andrews was elected a member of the State Senate in 1868 and re-elected in 1869. He returned to his practice from 1870 until 1878, when he was elected to the State Assembly. Also in 1878, he was nominated for governor and selected by the legislature after receiving a plurality in the election. He served as governor until 1881. In 1882, he was appointed to the Connecticut Supreme Court and was chief justice from 1889 to 1901. In 1902, he was a delegate to and presiding officer of the Connecticut Constitutional Convention. He died in Litchfield in 1902.
