Biographical or Historical Information

Charles Wyllys Alling, son of Amos and Amelia Beecher Alling, was born in New Haven, Connecticut on January 27, 1793. He was a farmer and manufacturer. In 1819 he married Lucy Booth, and settled in Orange, Connecticut where the couple had seven children. In 1823 he established a mill for carding wool and dressing cloth. He continued this business until 1840 when a new mill was built and spinning and looms were introduced. He continued the manufacture of cloth until 1845, in which years his sons, A.H. and C.B. Alling, succeeded him and carried on the business. In 1858 they relocated the business to Derby when the mill became too small to meet their needs. Charles W. Alling also carried on a saw and grist mill from 1819 until 1868. He was at various times a selectman and grand juror, and was also a sergeant of militia in the War of 1812. He passed away on April 6, 1868.
