Biographical / Historical

The Phelps Opera House was located on the site of Catlin's Tavern in a newly built brick building that Eugene L. Phelps, merchant and real estate investor had built following the fire of 1886, which destroyed much of the business district. The three-story building had stores on the first floor, offices on the second floor and the Opera House was located on the third floor. According to Julius Cahn's "Official Theatrical Guide" (1909) the Phelps Opera House had seating for 600, gas and electric lighting, a stage with a center trap door, and a stage measuring 24' wide by 15' high and 24' deep.
