Biographical / Historical
In 1792, General Assembly of the State of Connecticut passed the Act of Incorporation of the Connecticut Medical Society. Under the 1792 charter, medical societies were created in each of Connecticut's eight counties. The State Medical Society membership consisted of the membership of the combined county societies. Connecticut was the only state with an established hierarchy of state and local societies until at least the 1850s. From its inception until 1893, the Society was responsible for licensing physicians. Now known as the Connecticut State Medical Society, it exists as a voluntary non-profit organization for scientific and educational purposes.
