Scope and Contents
Gospel Hymns No. 2 (2011-63-0) is a music book of revial hymns published in 1876. The volume was published by Biglow and Main, and was the second in a series of six volumes produced for the public during the nineteenth century. Compiled by P.P. Bliss and Ira D. Sankey, it contains a large number of new gospel songs for the time, as well as some older selections that were popular at gospel meetings. Music and lyrics for songs such as "Onward, Christian Soldiers", "What a friend we have in Jesus", and "It is Well with My Soul" can be found in the music book. The item is currently housed in 3A Box 17.

Biographical or Historical Information
Philip Paul Bliss (July 9, 1838 – December 29, 1876) was an American composer, conductor, bass-baritone writer of hymns and a Gospel singer. He wrote many well-known hymns, including “Almost Persuaded”, “Hallelujah, What a Savior!”, “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning”, “Wonderful Words of Life”, and the tune for Spafford’s “It Is Well with My Soul.”
Ira D. Sankey (August 28, 1840 – August 13, 1908) was an American gospel singer and composer, and was known as “The Sweet Singer of Methodism.” Sankey wrote several hymns and songs, composed and arranged music for many more. From 1895 to 1908 he was president of the Biglow and main publishing company.
