Bissell, John, 1807-1898
Biography
John Bissell was born in Utica, N.Y., in 1807. He attended the Litchfield Law School in 1826 and 1827. He then went to Stamford, Conn., and studied law in the office of his future brother in-law Charles Hawley who had been a Litchfield Law School student in 1813. He passed the bar in Fairfield, Conn., in 1829. The following year he married Martha C. Holley of Stamford, Conn., on September 5, 1830. He then moved to New York City where he opened a law office on Wall Street. In 1832, he was the first lawyer to be appointed Commissioner of Deeds for the States and Territories. Four years later he was admitted as a Solicitor to the Court of Chancery in New York and as an attorney to the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He died in 1898.
