Biography

James Russell Cumming was born April 16, 1830 in North Adams, MA. Cumming served as a teacher in Colebrook, Connecticut and Farmington, Connecticut and studied medicine with Dr. Holcomb of West Granby. He married first Jane Elizabeth Cowles (1822-1856) who died following the birth of their daughter, Daisy, in 1855. He was graduated from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1862 and entered the army from Winsted, Connecticut the same year as assistant surgeon. He mustered out of the 12th Connecticut Volunteers in 1865 having been promoted to surgeon that year. Following the war, Cumming continued his studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1867, he moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut with his daughter and started a general practice. He married Anna Stillman Hubbell in 1871. They had two sons. Cumming died Feburary 4, 1891.
